The restauration of Christiansfeld

Several times Christiansfeld has undergone comprehensive restauration of the historical town centre.
In spite of being solid handicrafts, several houses in town have needed thorough renovation. In 2002, a comprehensive restauration of the historical buildings and streets in Christiansfeld was begun. At that time, it was not with the intention of being adopted on the UNESCO list of World Heritage, but it soon became to be so! In 2013, the wish arose that UNESCO would notice what was so unique about Christiansfeld – and that happened in 2015, when Christiansfeld was appointed World Heritage by UNESCO. However, the restauration work has not been completed yet.

In 2018, it was the turn of the God’s Acre – the Moravian cemetery – to be renovated and the restauration process is expected to be finalized by the end of 2019.

This comprehensive restauration work has been financed from various funds granted over several years, among others by the Moravian Church and various trust funds.
