About the Moravian Brethren

A Lutheran independent church

The Moravian Church is a Lutheran independent church with the same confessional basis as the Danish State Church (Den danske Folkekirke). The Moravian Church is also referred to as the Moravian Brethren and its origin dates all the way back to 1415.

The Moravian Church was originally organized in so-called choirs dividing the community into groups according to gender and marital status. There was a choir for unmarried sisters, unmarried brothers, boys, girls, married couples and widows. Gradually, this choir system was abandoned by the end of the 19th century.

The community was and still is led by a Council of Elders, which at the same time serves as town council as well as vestry.
